COMPARATIVE EDUCATION AND ITS SCOPE

According to Wikipedia Comparative Education is a discipline in the social sciences which entails the scrutiny and evaluation of different educational systems, such as those in various countries. Professionals in this area of endeavor are absorbed in advancing evocative terminologies and guidelines for education worldwide, enhancing educational structures and producing a context to which the success and effectively of education programs and initiatives can be assessed.

The Meaning of Comparative Education:

It’s a human nature to compare things which has similarities. In the same way comparison of different educational systems in context of geographical, economic, political and cultural aspects is comes under the umbrella of comparative study. Like other studies comparative education is a field that is source of attraction for many philosophers which conducting their own comparisons or produce definitions of it. In other words there are many educational comparisons and definitions.

Definitions: Comparative education has been defined in many ways by different authors but the main emphasis is on use of educational system data from other countries, and designs policies to improve education.

According to Good (1962, as cited in Lawal, 2004), it is a field of study dealing with the comparison of current educational theory and practice in different countries for purposes of broadening and deepening the understanding of educational problems beyond the boundaries of one’s own country.

Adeyinka (1994) gives the following definitions of the concept:

·        A study of two or more education system.

·        A study of how the philosophy, aim, objectives, culture and educational system of one country develop and its impact on that particular country.

·        A study of how the development of education in the past times happened across the different regions and its impact on these particular countries in the context of development of education.

·        A study of different schools to assess their administrative process in order to control or implementing government policies at different levels of education system.

From the above given definitions its quiet clear that comparative education is just not the comparison of different educational systems ,its more than that its study gives a clear picture of educational methodologies around the globe and clear educational perspectives which are influenced by culture , political ,economic and geographical aspects of different countries which plays vital role in educational development.

The Scope of Comparative Education:

There are five perspectives which clarifies the scope of comparative education, these are:

·  The subject matter and content; this consist of important contents of educational system such as structure, aim / goals, curriculum, policies etc.

 

·  Geographical units of study; it encompasses intra, international and national aspects and its impact on educational development.

 

·  Ideological scope; It’s a detail comparison of different educational systems on the basis of social, economic and political ideologies. For example communism, capitalism, free economy or capitalist economy etc.

 

 

· Thematic scope; this scope focuses on educational themes of various systems and compare them more than one geographical unit. Free education at primary and secondary level, universal primary education, education for all theme of UNESCO.

 

 

·    The historical or spatial scope; this deals with the study of the historical development of the discipline from the earliest (pre-historic) phase known as the period of Travelers' Tales to the modern phase known as the period of social science perspectives
